What comes to mind when you think Iceland? For some minds, it’s ice, which, yes, is sort of true. Others though, namely people who’ve been there, it’s something else. So what should come to mind when thinking Iceland?
- The People
Iceland is known for having some of the kindest people in the world. Visitors from everywhere are wowed by their kindness, some just simple acts like helping with groceries, and others, life-changing. In fact, Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland is named one of the safest and kindest cities in the entire world. Now, I know a city can’t be kind, but its people definitely can.
2. The Greenery
People all over the world wonder why Iceland is called Iceland, since it’s so green, and why Greenland is called Greenland, since it’s full of ice. That leads you to know that Iceland is very, very, very green. From the rolling hills to the borders of rivers, Iceland is super green. In fact, Conserve Energy Future stated that Iceland was the greenest country in the world and added that it had a Environmental Performance Index of 93.5.
3. The Northern Lights
Iceland is far enough north to see the magical northern lights, or Aurora Borealis. The northern lights are natural light displays that usually, (like its name), happen in the north. Iceland is known as one of the best places to see them.
There are more than 10,000 waterfalls in Iceland, all of them stated as extremely beautiful. As Iceland is one of the cleanest (meaning not polluted) countries in the world, so is the water. Some waterfalls have quick, narrow drops of cliffs, others spread in a whole straight line of crashing water.
Iceland is home to some of the world’s most active volcanoes. One of the most famous is Eyjafjallajökull, which is as hard to say as it is to spell. This one had some eruptions in 2010, and though the eruptions were quite small, they caused huge interruptions in air travel in parts of Europe. Another volcano, Grimsvotn, is Iceland’s most active, and authorities warn it may erupt soon. Don’t let that distract you from your vacation, though!
Did this convince you even a little bit to go to Iceland? Hopefully it did, because you won’t regret it.
